Ten with the Text -- September 13, 2009

      
The 8th Chapter of Mark is a transition point in this gospel. Jesus asks his disciples who people say that he is and then more pointedly he asks them who they say he is. Peter's great reply is "You are the Messiah." But we learn only a few verses later that Peter really doesn't understand the "vocation" of this Messiah.

This Sunday is the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost and the gospel text

is John 6:56-69. With this reading we complete our series of readings from

John 6 which is often called The Bread of Life Discourse. Jesus encounters

not just confusion but now abandonment as he tells his hearers to
"eat my flesh."

Two "signs" are described by John -- the Feeding of the 5,000
and Jesus Walking on the Water. What is a "sign?" Since this is our first
look at the Gospel of John, we begin with an introduction to this gospel
before digging into the text. And -- oops -- I got long-winded. This
one goes about 17 minutes! But we cover a lot!
